Drake’s new short film, Please Forgive Me, has released exclusively on Apple Music. The video was directed by the Anthony Mandler, the same mind who brought you “Over”, “Miss Me” and “Fancy”, as well as some hit videos for the woman Drake claims to have been in love with since he was 22, Rihanna.
Speaking of his muse, some fans are likely disappointed that she was not casted to play his bae, but rather, actress/model Fanny Neguesha graced the screen. Other actors featured include Jamaican star and global reggae icon Popcaan, Sonni Chidebere (“Blood Diamond”) and Kyla Reid.
The short film, produced by Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records, is based on his latest triple-platinum album Views and features seven songs from it. The plot line is slightly easy to become distracted from being that the focal point is the music, as it should be. However, the gist of it is that Drake plays a gangsta whose girl is offered $1 million to spend the night with an old, crusty millionaire. Drake and his girl, in Bonnie-and-Clyde fashion, sabotage the “dumb, rich man” and take off with his cash, resulting in a quite violent resolution and a very sad Drake.
Poor, poor Drake.
The rapper is definitely making the right moves by following Queen Bey and Bieber’s footsteps with a visual album. After all, it is predicted that by 2017, video will account for 69% of all consumer internet traffic, according to Cisco. Could it be that longer, cinematic visuals are the future of music videos?
Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure: Please Forgive Me is worthy of a Hood Grammy (#Tbt to when Drake created his own Instagram award show back in ’14). While some of us would have liked to have seen Rihanna be his leading lady, Fanny still did a brilliant job with the role so don’t cry, Drake…we forgive you.
